CANDELARIA
CELEBRATIONS TO TAKE OVER NYC STREETS
LIVING IN PERU, by Agnes Rivera January 6, 2017
For the first time,
the annual festival from Puno will be replicated in the Empire State this
February.
Puñenos are about to make
themselves heard – and seen – in New York.
Descendants and expats
from Puno, Peru living in New York City are coming together to hold their own Virgen
de Candelaria festival this February 4, 2017. Pedro Apaza Monroy, president
of the Puno residents of New York, told RPP news that the event will include a
parade with dancers. The representative said that “over 300 Puno natives
live in the North American city, 50 of whom are very active” in organizing
activities and meetings. Some of the Puñenos, as those from Puno are referred
to, have contributed US$ 20 each to help pay for the event.
The February event will
be organized with the help of cultural groups and supporters such as Wayra
Marca USA, Embassy of Puno Folklore, Perú Andinito and D.J. Cartagena.
Candelaria performances
in Puno
Candelaria is an annual
festival in honor of Puno’s patron saint. The southern Peru city draws some of
the best dance troupes from across the nation, culminating into one of Peru’s
largest folkloric festivals. The event typically takes place during the first
