Lake Titicaca is suffering from pollution but new projects are set to clean up the lake.
The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation (MVCS) have announced it is committed to the decontamination of Lake Titicaca with its new project called “System Wastewater Treatment Basin of Lake Titicaca” with hopes that it will benefit 870,000 inhabitants in the Puno region.
MVCS also informed media that the project will cost over 437 million dollars and will be funded by a Public-Private Partnership in the form of concessions, for a period 30 years.
MVCS is aiming to build treatment plants in the provinces of Ayaviri, Azángaro , Huancane, Ilave, Juliaca, Juli, Puno and Yunguyo, these regions produce the most amount of wastewater that usually ends up in the lake. Included Desaguadero.
One of the largest problems is the increasing amount of domestic sewage coming from town on the shores of Lake Titicaca; existing treatment plants are currently overloaded, poorly managed and outdated.
Not only will the construction and cleanup of the lake benefit the environment but it will benefit public health and economic development.
Ministers are positive about the new upgrades and have stated that the project is essential for the progress and development of Peru.
